Activities for THE GREAT BIKE RESCUE
News Reporter:
Gather information about bike thefts in your area.
- ask family and friends if they have had a bike stolen
- use a computer to do an online search of news articles. Use the key words "bike, theft, stolen" plus your city or area.
- look at the public web site maintained by you local police force. Find out what to do if your bike is lost or stolen. Make note of any statistics provided by the police.
Write a short newspaper article summarizing what you have discovered. Record it as a "news special" or read it live as if you are a news announcer.
Poster Art:
Riley named his little bike The Flame because of its appearance. Design a bike with a great paint job and a name to match. Put your creation on a "Lost and Found" poster.
Journal Entry:
Have you ever had something stolen from you--a bike, money, jewelry, food, a book? Remember your feelings at the time. Perhaps you experienced anger, betrayal, outrage, fear, sadness...or other emotions entirely. Did the way you react surprise you?
Write a journal entry about the theft. You might also want to include whether or not the experience changed the way in which you viewed the world.
Fiction Writer:
All the thefts in the story are revealed from Levi's point of view. Choose one theft and write about it from the point of view of the person who actually stole the bike.
